Quick trip to George Town at the weekend

We had a little bit of work to do in George Town at the weekend, so we spent a bit of time to see the sights too.  We stopped for late morning tea at the Low Head Cafe and then went to the lighthouse for a look.

Lots of yummy things to choose.

Christ Church at Low Head is the oldest church building
in the George Town area, built in 1877.

The Low Head lighthouse is at the mouth of the Tamar River.
It was first lit in 1833 and is the oldest continuously used pilot station.
The light is now unmanned and automated.

Paterson's Monument marks the spot where Lieutenant-Colonel Paterson
first landed in Northern Tasmania in 1804,
making George Town the first European settlement
in the north and one of the first in Australia.

Back over the Batman bridge on the way home.
The bridge is named after John Batman who was a local
businessman in Launceston in 1821.
The bridge was opened in 1968.
